Basketball Coaching – How to Move without the ball
As your players develop offensively, you can capitalize on their progress by incorporating offensive plays that you can run during practices and games (see Chapter 8 for more on evaluating your team at midseason). Offensive plays are specially designed methods for getting the defense off-balance and generating scoring opportunities. This section runs through some specialized offensive techniques, like moving without the ball and setting screens, that increase the fun and your team’s chances of achieving offensive success.
One of the keys to running effective practices is keeping the kids involved and limiting the standing-around time. That same principle applies to running your offense. Because only one player can handle the ball at a time, the other four players should be in motion most of the time. The more the kids move — especially when they don’t have the ball — the more problems they’ll present to opposing defenses. Just ask a hunter what’s more difficult: Shooting moving or stationary prey? When players aren’t moving, they make the defenders’ jobs easy.
One of the best and quickest ways to get open is by cutting — making a sharp turn or suddenly changing directions to get away from a defender. You can teach your players several different types of cuts, including the following:
Front cut: When the defender positions himself between the offensive player and the basket, the offensive player runs past him toward the basket.
Back cut: The offensive player makes a fake cut toward the player with the ball to get the defender moving in that direction. He then quickly changes direction and steps behind the defender and toward the basket.
Curl cut: The offensive player circles around a teammate to try to create traffic and get open. This is most effective when the teammate is setting a screen or when the defender is closely tracking the player everywhere he goes on the court.
Flashing cut: Most often made by a player in the low-post area, the flashing cut calls for a player to quickly step out into the vicinity of the freethrow line with his hands up ready to receive a pass.
During your practices (especially during drills), continually stress to your kids that keeping their feet moving is the secret to making it tough for opposing players to guard them. Using the preceding cuts with purpose is important, though. Players shouldn’t waste energy just running around the court.
