Ecommerce Shopping Carts – Put the Basket in the Header or Sidebar?
There are many ecommerce packages on the market today. Magento, X-Cart, OS Commerce and they are just the popular ones!
All ecommerce store systems that you or your web designer purchase will be fully customisable and the design is really half the art of getting a store to work. Cluttered design or unintuitive navigation can make or break a store.
One of the debated topics when designing an online shop is where to put the shopping basket. It needs to be visible and easily accessible to the visitor but also tucked away so that it does not intrude on the main focus the visitor has. Spending money on the store.
The two obvious locations for a cart are:
1. In the header of the site – tucked away nicely on every page and people are getting used to having it up there and know where it is.
2. In the side column – this area is where store systems like Magento and X-Cart typically put the basket when it is installed initially and probably not the best place for it to sit.
If you look at most of the successful stores out there like John Lewes, Fat Face, La Senza or Boots as examples, you’ll see the cart is AWLAYS in the header. In their infancy “off the shelf” shopping cart systems always had the basket in the sidebar, somewhere near the category navigation area and that has not changed to this day. When the ecommerce boom was starting it didn’t matter where the shopping basket was. If you had a store online you were way ahead of the competition and just the thought of shopping online was awesome in itself! Not so today.
Why then is every single successful online store out there putting the basket in the header? Simple, that’s where we as consumers just expect it to be these days and we’ve kind of been subliminally programmed to expect it to be there. Kind of like having the steering wheel on the right of your car in the UK. You just expect it don’t you, and why wouldn’t you. I find it incredible that these store manufacturers (pretty much every off the shelf cart program) have not acted on this yet and still force web designers to move the thing every time.
