Let’s Watch That in 3D

Do you want to spice up that Disney movie or do the kids need to impress their new friend they have invited over? Now with the reality of 3D TV at home you can watch that movie in 3D.

The industry standard is still evolving and there are exciting options in the works, but the main requirements for 3D viewing are a 3D TV set, 3D glasses, and a 3D movie or show.

Stereopsis is a 3D technology which tricks the eye into viewing images in 3D. These effects are caused by projecting two images onto the same screen and wearing glasses that open and shut in sync with flashing images on the screen. The shutters stay in sync and are controlled by a radio transmitter that is plugged into our 3D TV.

Remember those red and blue paper 3D glasses that used to come with some movies or on the back of cereal boxes? These may not have worked that well, but the purpose was to simulate Polaroid glasses which would offset two different images in each eye. These offset images combined with two images projected onto the screen at once, creates a 3D effect. Most home systems use the active shutter image glasses because the Polaroid images would be too expensive. Most theaters use Polaroid glasses because they don’t require power like the active shutter glasses.

All right, we are sold. Let’s watch that in 3D. Go ahead and rent or buy a 3D blu-ray movie, then hook up your blu-ray to your 3D TV using an HDMI 1.4 cable. Then plug in the transmitter on your active shutter glasses, dim the lights, pass the popcorn, and you are good to go.

What are options in actually viewing 3D media. How about a 3D sampler channel? Maybe you would prefer some on demand options or pay per view options, after all even if a movie is in 3D is there really a point in owning a movie and watching it over and over? I guess that is a debate for another time. But you can find some options on Direct TV, just update your firmware and use HDMI 1.4 for your hookup.

Big networks have big plans for 3D. ESPN is working on a 3D sports station. Talk about being the envy of the Super Bowl party. Discovery who has brought us the Nile, volcano’s, and oceans, will soon feature a 3D option. Don’t even get me started on 3D gaming the surface has barely been scratched in this arena, but it is soon to explode.

How about glasses that can actually show you 3D movies when hooked to a 3D compatible device.

Most big TV makers are experimenting with liquid crystal technology called Parallax Barrier, which can enable 3D image viewing without wearing the glasses. The liquid crystal will direct the eye to different images creating a 3D effect. Advantages are no glasses required. Disadvantages are that you need to be directly in front of the screen for the effect to work.

Be the envy of the neighborhood with your 3D TV system. Kids party, Super Bowl party, family movie night. 3D TV technology can enhance these events and more.
