Cauliflower Ears

Cauliflower ear in professional sports is quite common. It’s a particular condition in which the ears of a player tend to literally take on the appearance of a cauliflower. This is known to happen due to blunt trauma (strike to the ear) or constant rubbing of the ear against an apponent (mat or any surface). It has also been known to happen by wearing substandard or loose ear guards or head gear.  It is important to obtain a good quality ear guard or head guard from a good manufacturer such as Cliff Keen, Asics, or Brute, Matman, RevGear, or Addidas to avoid any issues. Purchase from reputable websites that carry authentic ear guards as there has been a surge of knock off gears which may not properly protect your ears. Through continual ear contact, one’s ears tend to get sore and swollen caused by hemotoma. Hemotoma is when blood and other fluids rushes to the the external ear in between the cartilage and the skin.  Hemotoma on the external ear can be removed by a physician by extracting the blood and fluid with a needle along with antibiotics to avoid any infections along with seven to fifteen days of recovery. It is recommended to use ear guards there after. If left untreated, the blood and fluid will harden and will take on a shriveled look resembling a cauliflower.

Cauliflower ear is also known medically as hematoma auris, perichondrial hematoma, and traumatic auricular hematoma. These names are given to cauliflower ear because of the damage that occurs within the ear and its surrounding parts.

Among those who suffer with cauliflower ear are wrestlers, jiu-jitsu practitioners, boxers, judokas, rugby players, and mixed martial artists. Most recently, cauliflower ears have been seen in mixed martial arts mma organizations like the UFC, Elite XC, Cage Fighter, Pride, HD Net Fights, etc. People may make fun of people with cauliflower ears. However, it is no laughing matter to be a star who works hard for success only to be ridiculed. Most sportsmen don’t like the idea of being targeted because of this.

Although Cauliflower ear in professional sports is not considered to be a significant problem, nor is it a life-threatening one, it’s something that players would like to do without. Indeed, there is a lot that can be done in order to combat it, and a lot has indeed already been done.

If you suffer with a similar condition that sportsmen suffer with, it is most advisable to see a doctor for treatment. Cauliflower ears can be a condition that spoils your hearing, and you should not let this important sense (of hearing) deteriorate. Cauliflower ear in professional sports is not something that players are proud of although it is a sign of hard work in their field. With greater awareness and regular protective gear, it can be avoided.
