Worn formally or in a slapdash fashion the Hewitt & May Classic V1 red and blue Eton twill always gets me noticed. Onlookers all ask the same simple question – where had I purchased it? I usually reply, nonchalantly of course, that it was given to me by my rather tall German friend by the name of Hans who said he had found it in a Notting Hill jumble sale. Nowadays, buying a quality formal shirt has become a murky and complicated business. Choice is overwhelming and an endless number of shops indulge in shameless sales and confusing jargon. POW! That’s Prince of Wales in shirt talk for a Prince of Wales collar. In other words it’s a classic city collar. Why didn’t they just call it a classic city collar? Confused? Then I won’t go into what one shirtmaker calls his Tewkesbury and Tuscany range.
At Hewitt & May they prefer to keep things simple. Their syndicate range of shirts are modestly known as the Classic V1. The V comes from the fitted shape of the shirt, from the top of the shoulder down into the waist where the shirt fits closer to the body for a more refined and stylish fit. Hewitt & May have become renowned in a very short space of time for using colour that leaves no mystery to the true meaning of the word ‘dash’. Each shirt displays a clever and elegant use of colour that will definitely get you noticed. The Classic V1 is designed with sophistication and elegance in mind. Superbly styled, the shirts are perfect, right down to the smallest detail. The collars, the cuffs – even the buttons display the attributes of something rarely found in shirtmaking today: care and attention. Hewitt & May take great pride in using the highest quality two fold Egyptian cotton sourced from the finest mills. What’s most admirable about the Classic V1 is the way in which the collar stays upright regardless of how the shirt is worn.
It was Hans, a colleague of mine who had first introduced me to the Classic V1. He showed me a couple of unwashed shirts he’d found at the jumble sale and invited comment on his recent purchase. Fortunately for him I could easily detect what was a high quality shirt from my time spent working at Harvey Nicks. So I asked him wittily where he had acquired such fine articles of typically English clothing? ‘I still remember how the names of Hewitt & May on the shirt labels immediately grabbed my attention. There was something reassuring about that label. Hewitt & May didn’t just sound comfortable, it also looked pleasantly different. And then the shirts themselves. No ordinary shirts mind you. Timeless shirts. Both of the highest quality with a sophistication all of their own – had clearly once belonged to a gentleman’, replied Hans. He almost sounded like an English aristocrat himself, if it hadn’t been for his German accent.
Obviously intrigued by this superbly fitted Hewitt & May shirt made from the finest two fold fabric, I set forth on another excursion but this time in pursuit of Hewitt & May in person but no end of research could uncover the identities of either Hewitt, or May. Or the whereabouts of their tailor’s shop. In Jermyn Street, Bond Street, Savile Row, in all the best places, the trail ran cold. Even though I never found the whereabouts of these two marvelous shirtmakers, all is not lost.
