Wrist sprains in sports: Causes, symptoms and treatments – New Delhi, India
Wrist sprains can happen to anyone, either because of repetitive use or accidents in sports and recreational activities. A sprain is an injury to any of your ligaments joining a bone to another bone. In wrist sprains, any of the ligaments supporting your wrist joint can become overstretched or torn, causing symptoms.
Causes of wrist sprain
Wrist sprain is common in sports activities that may cause you to fall on your outstretched hand (FOOSH injury) or twist your wrist. Although the condition can happen to anyone, wrist sprains are common in young athletes participating in sports like basketball, baseball, football, boxing, ice hockey, wrestling and judo. People who like snowboarding, skateboarding, skiing, or inline skating may be at risk for wrist sprains when they fall on an outstretched hand.
Severity of wrist sprain
Just like any other sprain, wrist sprains are graded as I, II, or III. In grade I (mild) wrist sprain, your ligament is stretched with little or no tearing of ligament fibers. Grade II or moderate sprain happens when your ligament is stretched with fibers torn but the tear is incomplete. Grade III wrist sprain is the most severe with the ligament completely torn.
Symptoms
Symptoms of wrist sprain may vary depending on the severity of your injury. However, the most common symptom of the condition is pain. Other symptoms of a wrist sprain may include swelling at the site of your injury; pain worsens when you move your hand; tenderness; bruising or discoloration of the skin over the site of your injury; and difficulty moving your hand. Some people may experience weakness of their hand muscles.
Symptoms of wrist sprains may be similar with that of a wrist fracture, especially with severe sprain. It is important that you have to let it be checked by a qualified health care practitioner.
Treatments for wrist sprains
Treatments for wrist sprains may vary according to the severity of your injury. However, in most cases of sports injuries, the first line of treatment is applying ice on the site of the injury to help relieve pain and reduce swelling. When using an ice pack, apply it on the site of your injury for 20 minutes at a time every 3 to 4 hours per day until your swelling and pain subsides.
In addition to icing, other treatments for mild wrist sprains include resting and avoiding movements that make your wrist symptoms worse. Elevating your limb above the level of your heart may also help minimize swelling in your wrist.
Taking over the counter pain medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may help with your pain and swelling.
For moderate and severe wrist sprains, a doctor should be consulted so that he or she can make sure that the cause of your symptoms are not from a fractured wrist bone. Treatments may include ice, pain medications, immobilization with a splint or cast, and physical therapy. Sometimes, surgery may be necessary to repair or replace your severely damaged ligament.
In any case, physical therapy can help you with your wrist sprain. Physical therapy can help you manage your symptoms, strengthen your weakened muscles and return you to your usual activities or sports fast and as safely possible.
