Hockey Equipment: The Importance Of The Stick Handling
Hockey gear is fast becoming the number one thing most hockey players think about. Forget about the goal scoring, they don’t worry about faking out the goalie anymore. Some don’t practice their stick handling as they feel the hockey stick they buy will do the work for them. While sticks like the new Easton Stealth RS hockey stick are most likely top end ones, you still need to practice in order to pull off your basic to advanced hockey skills. Deking is always important. We’ll go over a couple of steps and reasons why you must always practice stick handling if you play the sport.
First and foremost, those who play hockey want to succeed. In order to do so you must learn to skate. The next important step is crucial. You need to learn how to use your stick. It doesn’t matter if you have a two piece or a one piece, but it is very important. Why? It’s the way the game is played. You control the puck with the stick and you defend the puck with the stick. You need to learn how to cradle the puck and move it properly in order to maneuver around players and goalies. There is nothing worse than a player that loses control of the puck easily. Remember, in the sport of hockey, turnovers are game changing. Just watch any NHL game and you will probably see turnovers that can completely change the pace of the game.
Second, passing is the key to success. Most people like to shoot, but if you don’t pass, you won’t be very good at hockey. Accepting the puck is a fine skill. You need to be able to get the puck in order to score right? Of course you do. Being able to pass is an ever greater skill. Things do not always go as planned and you may need to get rid of the puck to a teammate to advance it forward. If you use your hockey stick right, you can do tic tac toe passing all the way up to the oppposing team’s goalie.
Lastly come the fancy moves. These tricky moves can be done to get by players or the goalies. What is the trick to them? Most players that do this well tape up their blade. The hockey tape will actually cause the puck to adhere more to blade and allow you to pick it up in ways that will dazzle the eye. As you can see, the way you handle your hockey stick is very important.
