Emergency vehicle lights are powerful communicators
Emergency vehicle lights, whether they are seen on a police vehicle, or an ambulance, or a towing truck, communicate to the viewers in their own powerful way. The language of emergency lights is clear, loud, explicit, and easy to decipher. It needs only minimal instruction for anyone to understand what the different colors of emergency lights convey. When you see the blue emergency vehicle lights of a police vehicle flashing from behind on your vehicle, you instantly understand that it is telling you to pull over. In other words, the blue flashing police lights is a command ‘pull over, we need to talk to you.’ If the words have been recorded and relayed at top volume, it might not be as effective.
Likewise, when the red emergency vehicle lights are flashing, it means that there has been an emergency. The red emergency lights, emanating from any type of emergency vehicle, say, ‘there has been an emergency, move over, and we need to go fast.’ Again, communicating this much to the other vehicles on the road through megaphones will not be easy. Nor will it be as effective as flashing red emergency vehicle lights.
When the emergency lights on a vehicle are amber, it is not asking those in the other vehicle to pull over. Nor is it conveying that an emergency has occurred. Amber emergency vehicle lights simply tell the other vehicles and pedestrians on the road to be cautious. It is meant to convey the message, ‘there is some danger, be cautious and stay away.’ Amber emergency vehicle lights take its message to a distance much farther than blue, red, or clear lights do, because amber can travel longer distances than those other colors through rain, fog, or snow.
Directional arrow sticks that are used as police emergency vehicle lights have their own way of communicating. The stick is mostly amber in color and will be situated behind the main light bar. There may be up to eight rear facing lights. These lights communicate by flashing in sequence. Traffic is directed to the left, or to the right, or around the vehicle with the flashing patterns of these emergency lights. Some arrow sticks will have high and low settings as well. The high is mostly used during daytime while low setting generally suffices for night. Amber is used as emergency vehicle lights in different types of vehicles like towing trucks, construction vehicles, patrol vehicles, or any commemorative or celebratory motorcade that is moving slow and so requires other vehicles on the road to be cautious.
Green is a less used color in emergency vehicle lights in USA. A green light, when seen on a vehicle generally conveys that the vehicle belongs to an emergency medical technician, or firefighter, or in some cases private security officers. Green could be the indication of the presence of the command vehicle of the group. Finally, purple, though rarely in use in emergency lights, when used may convey that the vehicle that sports it is a funeral vehicle. Colors like green, purple etc. are more in use as emergency vehicle lights in some other countries like Canada, Australia etc.
