The 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi: Russia’s Second Chance

The 22nd Summer Olympic Games held in Moscow in 1980 was the first time Russia (then known as the Soviet Union) played host to this multi-nation event. And before the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, this was the only time that Russia was given the chance to play host.

Bidding was held in 1974 to determine who’s going to host the 1980 Summer Olympics. Only 2 cities participated in this bid: Moscow and Los Angeles. On October 23, 1974, during the 75th International Olympic Committee session held in Vienna, Austria, Moscow won via a vote tally of 39-20, hereby being named as host city for the 1980 Summer Olympics.

Though controversy is not exactly uncommon in the Olympic Games, this edition is arguably one of the most tumultuous ones in history. Headlining this Olympics is a boycott. Due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, some countries boycotted the games as an act of protest. Initiated by the United States, these countries include Japan, China, the Philippines, Argentina, and Canada. Also due to this boycott, countries such as the United Kingdom and France sent a much smaller delegation than usual. In addition, countries such as Andorra, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, the UK, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Puerto Rico, San Marino, Spain, and Switzerland marched under the Olympic Flag instead of their national flags. Also, New Zealand, a country whose delegates competed independently, marched under their national Olympic committee flag. In addition, the representatives of these 16 countries have the Olympic flag raised and the Olympic anthem played during medal ceremonies. With 80 nations participating, this represents the smallest number of countries joining in the Olympics since 1956. But the controversy didn’t stop there. On the very next Olympics (1984) held in Los Angeles, the Soviet Union, together with its communist allies, made a boycott of their own.

27 years after their controversial hosting of the Olympics, Russia is going to have their second chance to host the Olympics. During the 119th IOC session held in Guatemala City, it was announced that Sochi, Russia won the bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics. The 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi is now sealed, and it would be Russia’s best chance to prove itself again to be worthy of hosting this prestigious event showcasing various athletic talents on the world stage.

With the 1980 Summer Olympic Games already in the rear view mirror, preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi is now in full swing. All eyes are now in Sochi as it tries to make history 3 years from now and end 34 years of waiting for Olympic Games to be held again on Russian soil.
