What are the Official Professional Sports? – A Comprehensive List of Professional Sports
Professional sports, in comparison to Amateur sports, are sports where athletes or players get compensation for their performance. Professional sports has arrived to the forefront due to a combination of some developments. Mass media, such as the internet, radios and televisions and increased holiday time have ushered more audiences, such that sports associations or teams can mandate high earnings. Because of this more sports men and women have decided to make sports their main occupation, dedicating serious training to strengthen skills, physical state, and experience to current levels of accomplishment. This skill has also helped heighten the popularity of professional sports.
A good number of sports played professionally have amateur players also, far exceeding the professional players. Professional sport is understood by some as a paradox of the basic philosophies of sport, game played for its specific purpose and pure pleasure, instead of a way to earn a living. As a result, several groups and critics have opposed the growth of professional sports. For instance, Rugby union used to be a part-time sport played in by amateurs for several years, and English cricket has been rumored to suffer the quality of the game because of “un-professional” approach.
Up until the end of the 20th century, the Olympic Games technically enlisted amateur athletes only. On the other hand, successful Olympians from the West frequently had endorsement contracts from large companies. In the same period, Communist nations have enjoined teams of Olympians who were all supposedly students or working professionals, but most of them were actually paid by the state to undergo training on full time. In 1982, Adidas has sponsored British Olympic athletes and paid them to wear their clothing and stuff. Historically, the 1988 Olympics was the first to legitimately accept professional athletes in select sports.
