Stylish, stunning and sexy – dresses for autumn and winter can be as thrilling or understated as you want them to be. From flashy, bold reds and scarlets through to autumnal ochre, browns to the quintessentially classy black; they’re all in vogue this season.

Bold eighties looks brimming with shoulder pads and lace will be continuing to hit the high street en masse, accompanied by an incredible assortment of matching accessories; the choice will be almost overwhelming and the prices will be affordable and enticing. But, for those who don’t wish to subscribe to that trend there are plenty of stylish alternatives. Off-the-shoulder gowns are a direct contrast to such retro glam, and are still widely available on the high street in a range of autumnal colours.
For winter wear, especially on chilly nights out, expect warm bold opaques, lacy tights and leggings to be required leg wear. Or for the ultra-formal occasion held mainly indoors, sheer black or illusion tights will make your legs look fabulous, especially when worn with the latest footwear trend.
Shboots are this season’s hot items; the perfect combination of shoe and boots that come complete with high heels. If your money is going on dresses and you don’t want to shell out on new footwear then make do with equally stylish ankle boots retrieved from your wardrobe. Or, if you do have a few quid to spare and fancy something more extravagant, then opt for on-trend over the knee boots in leather, suede or patent plastic.
If you’re planning a big night out, why not opt for this season’s latest colour – purple. Bold, yet colourful, purple is a great colour for dresses, particularly studded dresses. For the true autumn ’09 look, why not combine purple with wet looks and metallics?
Coming to designer stores and high street outlets this season are a plethora of clothing delights, especially for wear during the day. Check dresses of all colours will be fun this autumn, worn with jumpers, cardigans or layers to ward off the chill; again accompanied by the essential ankle boots and leg wear.
For that racy night out, bold colour short slinky jersey dresses will suffice, or for a standout evening then opt for a multi-coloured all over sequin dress worn well above the knee. Not cheap, but definitely worth it!
Whether casual, smart or worn for popping out during the day, there is a fantastic selection of dresses available on the high street, and most are incredibly affordable; have a look and stock up for autumn.
