West Coast Sporting Goods – FastPitch Softball Bats
Fastpitch softball has been a popular pastime for a very long time, but when the sport was entered into the 1996 World Olympics things really became more competitive and the technology of the equipment improved. Companies had been improving the science behind fastpitch softball bats since 1985, and several of the major companies such as Worth, Anderson, Louisville Slugger, and Easton had been manufacturing high tech, high performance graphite and aluminum bats throughout the 80′s. But when demand increased in the mid-nineties these companies foresaw world-wide exposure of the sport, and began the race to develop the best performing and most durable materials for high performance bats.
Composite fastpitch softball bats—which combine lightweight carbon graphite with a more durable aluminum alloy—were the product of these improvements. In the late 1990′s Miken and a few other manufacturers started releasing composite bats, and in 2001 the Louisville Slugger Genesis won first place for performance in the Bat Wars. It was then that people really started paying attention to the technology of the bat. After that, composites bats were the most desirable.
Aluminum bats will usually surpass composite bats when it comes to durability—but they will always have the weakness that in order to be as lightweight as the composites, the walls of the aluminum bat will need to be so thin and therefore will easily dent in cold weather or with wet balls. But nowadays the aluminum bats rarely outperform composites. Why is this? For the most part it has to do with swing weight, and the distribution of weight along the shaft of the bat, which is called the balance point. A bat with a lower balance point—that is weight distributed further from the end cap than the handle—will always swing with more speed than a bat of equal weight and length. For a typical paler who needs a lighter bat to maintain control, this distribution of weight will make a harder hit than otherwise.
Just about all manufacturers make popular models of composite fastpitch softball bats. DeMarini has a very popular CF4 model, which is supposed to be made of a composite that is 22% stronger than competitors with a technology that uses double and vertical reinforcement weave fibers. Another bat maker, Combat has their ever popular Virus, a bat with Anisotropic Design Technology (ACT) which provides a soft feel to even the toughest hit. Anderson Bat company has always been a company devoted to fastpitch softball bats, and they have two models that are two solid hitters: the Techzilla and the always popular Rockettech. Both bats use their patented Power Arch Technology, a advancement that boosts flexibility for increased pop while supporting the barrel for greater durability.
