“Catcher in The Rye” is JD Salinger’s a only novel. Although it only has tens of thousand words, it has exerted a tremendous impact in American society and literature. In 1951, the birth of this novel caused an immediate sensation. The experiences and ideas of the hero received a strong positive response from the readers, especially the high school students. This book describes Holden`s experiences and thoughts in New York City in two days and nights following his expulsion from school in the first-person narrative. It not only depicts graphically the spiritual world of a desperate, agonized and lonely young man from middle class, but also the contradicted psychological feature of a teenager and consequently criticizes the hypocrisy and pretension of adults. Horton is the embodiment of teenager with complicated and conflicted personality. He has a pure and child-like heart for beautiful life and lofty ideal.
