How is Rugby different from Soccer?
Soccer is generally known as football all across the world and rugby evolved from soccer. Contrary to the popular belief, rugby is quite similar to soccer than football. Soccer and rugby are both continuous game. Initially the point scoring was also similar but changed later. Strategically also there is some similarity. Both the game does not require specialty players in the team, all the players are supposed to have basic skills of running, passing, kicking and tackling.
As rugby is evolved from soccer, it can be assumed as a close relative of soccer. However, with time many changes have taken place in the game. Some differences between rugby and soccer are listed below:
- In rugby you can use hands but soccer needs to be played entirely by feet.
- 15 players make a rugby team while 11 players are needed to make a football team.
- Rugby follows two set of rules divided into rugby union and rugby league while soccer is played according to universally accepted rules.
- Goal scoring and subsequent points given to each goal is only one in soccer. Whereas, number of points given for each goal and try will be different according to different code of rules. Which can wary from 2- 5.
- Rules regarding “offside” are different in both games. In rugby it means no player can pass the ball forward with hands and no player placed ahead can receive it. While in soccer “offside” means a player cannot pass to another beyond last defender.
- Penalty kick, due to a foul in rugby is taken front the spot where the foul happened while in soccer it is taken from a point which is 12 meters away from goal line.
Apart from what has been written above, there is no other significant difference between the two sports.
