Scoring Points in College Wrestling

What makes this different than other wrestling styles is that there is a feature that the wrestler will need to hold the oppositions shoulders towards the mat, for about a second to have be awarded for a fall. There are also points awarded for near falls, in college style wrestling, that is either worth 2 or 3 points, which is for the holding of the opposition player close to their back. There is also a credit that is given for riding time, or for time that which during the type of hold they will have control of the opposition player that is on the mat. This point that is reward for riding time is only given in an awarded collegiate wrestling and not in high school.

The NCAA, better known as The National Collegiate Athletic Association governs the body for wrestling in college, and there is a separate association that governs the High School wrestling. The college style lasts for 7 minutes, that is the college style bout, and there is a three minute for the 1st set, which is then followed up by a two 2 minute stage. The bouts that become tied at the end of the time, will then go into an overtime stage. Where as the high school match would be about six minutes, and three 2 minute stages.

The scoring procedures are as follows, there is four general scoring procedure for College style wrestling. The takedowns will be awarded when a wrestler brings the opposing player down towards the mat from a standing point. There are plus points when a wrestler will take the opposition player straight to their back. A takedown will involve double legs, single legs, headlocks, high crotches, shrugs, body locks and a fireman’s carries.

The reversals will be scored to a wrestler that is in controlled of the opposition player that is on the mat, and makes a move that has the control by putting themselves on top of the opposition player. Which means reversing the player and situation. A reversal will include a switch, hip heists, and rolls.

In conclusion there are many ways to be rewarded a point in wrestling. They include the reversal, for switching a player on their back and a takedown that is given to the player who is able to take the opposition down to the ground from standing. There are different guidelines and rules given to High School and College Wrestling as the older the get more experience so the rules change. Wrestling involves a lot of strength and control, because you need to be able to hold and control your opposition in order to win.
