Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Massachusetts: High Percentage Sweep Using the Cross Collar Grip from Butterfly Guard
This is the second video in a short instructional series on using the cross collar grip from the butterfly guard in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by BJJ Black Belt, Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts trainer Stephen Whittier (The MMA Performance Professor) of Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness in Wareham, MA.
Following up on the last video, Professor Whittier reviews the importance of correct positional posture, using the head and hands as obstructions to keep your opponent from getting dominant grips, and maintaining proper space in the position.
He then reviews controlling your opponent with the combination of a cross collar grip (always deeply inserted in the lapel so that the inside wrist is aligned with the opponent’s carotid artery so there is always an option to choke), and the other hand gripping the pants just outside the opponent’s knee on the same side as the cross grip. This will control an movement side-to-side to pass your guard and ensure you can stay squared up.
From here, the two primary pressures and push and pull. In both cases, Prof. Whittier emphasizes, the arms should be loose and the energy you give your opponent will be akin to shaking out a blanket with the pull, and punching with the push (the arms should never be stiff).
He then details a high percentage sweep, reversal into a guard pass from this position. This is off the push pressure, but will often be set up off the opponent’s reaction to your pull (the opponent, not wanting to get snapped forward off base, will pull back instinctively, and you just go with it). As your opponent’s head comes back over his hips, you apply the “punching” pressure to with you collar grip while simultaneously pulling with your opposite hand grip on the knee. It is important from here that if your right hand is in the collar, your right knee is up (and vice versa for left side), otherwise as your opponent falls back and you sit up, your lead knee will be down on the mat rather than ready to pass. This will stop your ability to split your opponent’s guard and will cause your arms to be separated from your body, which can make you susceptible to attacks.
Instead, as you come up, your lead knee should split the guard and begin to knee slide diagonally over your opponent’s leg (the same leg you were controlling with your other hand).
Here Professor Whittier shows a method of completing the knee slide pass safely without fighting for the underhook. Maintaining the collar grip, he places his forearm across his opponent’s neck line so that his weight is on the forearm and his elbow is pinning his opponent’s far shoulder. This will ensure that he cannot get to your back. To complement this and help keep him flat, once your shin has pinned his leg your will take your free hand off the knee and use it to grab and pull up on your opponent’s near side arm. This also serves to clear a path for you to slide into for the pass.
